Der hinter der Talsperre befindliche Rurstausee, der zum Wasserverband Eifel-Rur gehört, ist nach der Bleilochtalsperre (Thüringen) der volumenmäßig zweitgrößte Stausee Deutschlands.
Die Rurtalsperre Schwammenauel steht in der Nord-Eifel, zwischen Simmerath und Heimbach (Eifel). Der Rurstausee, der voll aufgestaut etwa 24 km lang ist, 783 ha Gesamtfläche und 203,2 Mio. m³ Stauraum aufweist, liegt im 2004 gegründeten Nationalpark Eifel.
