The wine estate
The Fries wine estate lies in enchanting countryside:
The central Moselle - the region around Bernkastel-Kues belongs to the most beautiful country districts in the world. Only the Riesling which grows on its ancient slopes is more reputed. For us , this is an incentive. We work and live in a spectacular winegrowing district.
Total area under vines 3.7 hectares
Average age of the vines 41 years
Non-grafted vines 40%
Estate-bottled wine (100 % Riesling)
Riesling Einzellagen [single vineyard]
The artisans
This work needs skill and an enormous fund of experience: it is a story which has gone on over generations, where people work "hand in hand", where experience is handed on , where styles of wine are crafted, worked on and perfected over decades. Over centuries we have cared for our vineyards, acquired intimate knowledge of our plots , and lived and worked unremittingly for the sake of Riesling. Our vineyards are genuinely "hand selected" parcels , which you might almost say, are a part of the family . From them we create wines of top international quality.
Guest rooms
Plenty of room
Our estate with its guest house is situated on the edge of the village of Maring-Novland, surrounded by gardens, fruit trees and meadows. A mere 100 000 years ago, the bank of the Moselle river ran past here until the river found an easier course. This is where the Lieser ("Lesura" in Latin) winds through the valley. The winery occupies a site of almost half a hectare and seems very new by comparison and possesses the charm of a family business.
Peace and quiet aplenty
Guests occupy quiet , comfortable guest rooms , tastefully decorated , right next to the winery. A sitting room, a balcony, a terrace and a kitchenette are at your disposition, and of course our "vinotheque". In particular, we wish to make your holiday a personal experience.
Plenty of culture
In our region, culture comes in drinkable form. What could be more appropriate than spending the nicest days of the year on the estate ? Especially when you can learn everything you always wanted to know about that cultivated drink, wine. Enjoy the most pleasant side of the estate. Wander carefree through our vineyards, relax in the garden, ride or cycle through the beautiful countryside.
The many facets of our district
Discover a rich, ancient culture in an area where Nature varies between the charming and the spectacular. There are few other wine and holiday regions which are capable of fascinating the visitor by their many facets . There are plenty of museums, and concerts, plenty of wine, wonderful people, Roman remains, culinary secrets, ships, wine festivals, the Eiffel mountains with the maars [volcanic lakes], and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The nearby town of Trier (Germany's oldest city) was once the second most important in Rome and for a time, the Roman Emperor's official residence.
